BLOOMINGTON, Minn. — Authorities are continuing to investigate a serious crash on Interstate 494 in Bloomington after a multi-vehicle collision caused significant traffic disruptions and prompted an emergency response from law enforcement, firefighters, and medical personnel.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the most recent major crash on westbound Interstate 494 near Highway 100 occurred shortly before 4:20 a.m. on June 13, involving two sport utility vehicles and a semi-truck. Investigators reported that a Honda CR-V and a Jeep Grand Cherokee collided in the westbound lanes before a Peterbilt semi-truck subsequently struck the Jeep.
Emergency crews responded quickly to the scene, where traffic was reduced for several hours while first responders treated those involved and investigators documented evidence. Authorities confirmed that the crash resulted in at least one fatality, while several others involved in the collision were evaluated as part of the ongoing investigation.
The Minnesota State Patrol has not yet released a final determination regarding the cause of the crash. Investigators are examining vehicle positions, roadway conditions, witness accounts, and other evidence to establish the sequence of events leading up to the collision.
Interstate 494 is one of the Twin Cities’ busiest transportation corridors, carrying thousands of commuters and commercial vehicles daily. The crash contributed to substantial traffic backups in the Bloomington area as motorists were forced to navigate lane restrictions and emergency operations. Officials advised drivers to seek alternate routes and expect delays during the morning commute.
The incident occurred amid ongoing construction and traffic management projects along portions of Interstate 494. Transportation officials have warned motorists to remain alert for changing traffic patterns, lane closures, and work zones throughout the corridor as major infrastructure improvements continue.
Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or who may have relevant information to cooperate with investigators. Additional details regarding contributing factors, possible citations, and the identities of those involved may be released as the investigation progresses.
As crews continue to respond to incidents along Interstate 494, transportation officials are reminding drivers to reduce speed, maintain safe following distances, and remain attentive, particularly in construction zones and during periods of heavy traffic.
